I’m not a complete idiot.
I kinda wish that I was though, because it would make living
so very much easier. I read an article about my generation and it was quite
enlightening. The article talked about us baby boomers being the most
privileged generation in history. We were raised more or less in a war free
world (what about Vietnam ),
good health care, we were safe roaming inn our neighbourhoods, had access to
good schools and our parents had more disposable income than their parents did.
I won’t even go into how lucky we were to have the music we did.
One of the things the article mentioned is that being well
educated; we knew exactly what we didn’t have that others did. We tended to be
pretty lazy for the most part and let our lives be dictated by fate instead of
actively working toward a goal. Hey, don’t blame me; blame the guy that wrote
the article. We didn’t really have to be driven, jobs were plentiful and if you
worked hard, anything was possible. You did have to work hard though.
Our generation has “the better life” driven home to us
constantly through newspapers, magazines, television, movies and of course the
ever present internet. We have a consumer based economy and have all been
trained to be perfect little consumers. “There’s a new iPhone? I need one of
those! Mine is six months old.” TV is last year’s model, so it’s already
obsolete.
Somewhere in the last three paragraphs, I forgot the point I
was trying to make. This is the writing equivalent of being in the basement and
not knowing why you went downstairs in the first place. I can tell you that it
was going to be interesting and would have made you examine your life
direction, or maybe not. Who knows, I can’t remember.
I have to start making notes!
